Circumference
She
Lies on the edge
Of a circle.
They stay
within. She hovers
without. Hello? Can
you hear me? Can
you see me? Do
you care? She
tried to
break in once.
She failed.
So she stopped
trying. She
stayed on the edge
of that circle.
She would
patrol the perimeter
the circumference
scanning for gaps
But the ever shrinking radius
was a better guard than she.
No one in,
more left out.
She
didn't like
the person
she was,
the person
she became
as she
defended that circle.
So one day she left.
Stopped trying to find a place
on that circumference.
Because
when she spoke,
no one heard.
When she cried,
no one saw.
Not even she.
Chin up.
Shoulders back.
Smile with crinkled eyes.
Years of friendship.
Years of her life
she will never get back.
Used when necessary
otherwise ignored.
Away yet she is stuck.
She has a past she does not
want to remember,
A future she can't predict,
And a present that confuses her.
A present that erases her.
So she watches her circles
Within them she plays the game
Gambling what's left to reclaim what's lost.
Within she guards herself
Her weapons single truths.
It will work.
She will be better.
She will never hover around a circumference again.
Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThis is a masterpiece! I loved the formatting and how it changed as the girl decided to leave the social circle.
